Both track loaders and skid steers are capable compact loading machines used across construction, landscaping, civil works, and site preparation. The choice between them is not a question of which is superior, but which suits the specific ground conditions, surfaces, and applications your operation faces most often. Getting that decision right before purchase or hire avoids the practical cost of running the wrong machine for the majority of your work.

How the undercarriages differ

The core difference is the undercarriage. A track loader runs on rubber or steel tracks that distribute the machine’s weight across a longer, wider contact patch. A skid steer runs on four tyres and steers by slowing or locking the wheels on one side relative to the other, which causes the machine to skid into the turn.

This difference has direct operational consequences:

  • Ground pressure. A tracked machine distributes its operating weight over a larger contact area, reducing the load per unit of ground surface. At equivalent operating weight, a track loader exerts significantly less ground pressure than a wheeled machine.
  • Traction. Tracks maintain continuous contact with the ground across slopes, loose material, and uneven surfaces where tyres can slip or spin.
  • Surface damage. The skidding steering action of a wheeled machine scours the ground beneath it during turns. On established lawns, prepared soil, finished landscaping, or any sensitive surface, a tracked machine causes less remediation work after the fact.

Where track loaders perform best

For soft ground, slopes, or surface-sensitive applications, the track loader is usually the more productive tool across a full working day.

Ground pressure and compaction

The compaction argument is worth understanding in detail. Soil compaction under repeated machine passes is a genuine site management problem on construction and landscaping projects. Compacted soil beneath finished paving or landscaping creates drainage and settlement problems long after the machine has moved on.

Ground pressure is calculated from operating weight relative to the total contact area of the undercarriage. A heavier Takeuchi track loader can impose less ground pressure than a lighter skid steer, because the tracked contact area grows proportionally with the machine’s size in a way that four fixed tyre contact patches do not.

Track systems require more disciplined maintenance than wheeled undercarriages. Track tension must be checked regularly, and the undercarriage components (rollers, idlers, drive sprockets, and the track itself) represent the significant ongoing wear cost in a tracked machine’s operating budget. This needs to be built into the cost plan, not treated as a surprise.

Skid steers are simpler in this regard. Tyre wear is the main consumable cost, and routine maintenance is accessible without specialised tooling. For hire fleet operators, the maintenance overhead per tracked machine is a genuine factor in the acquisition decision.

Matching the machine to the operating environment

The practical decision usually comes down to your primary environment. If the majority of your work is on soft ground, slopes, or surfaces where compaction is a concern, a Takeuchi track loader will deliver better productivity and require less surface remediation. If the majority of work is on hard, flat, accessible surfaces, a skid steer is simpler and typically more cost-effective over the machine’s life.
